Anger Management

Is anger affecting your life, damaging your relationships and your health?

The first step in helping yourself with anger management is to understand what causes excessive anger and to start addressing these issues.

Excessive anger is often a result of stress. For example, if you get frustrated or feel angry with your boss, you may have to keep those feelings to yourself at work, but eventually you might snap at home. Or you may become more and more wound up by little annoyances that build up over the day until you reach a point when you snap over something seemingly trifling. There are many other circumstances that can lead to having a lower tolerance for irritations. These include overtiredness, feeling ill or hungry, hormonal changes, chronic pain or addictive cravings. It is important to have strategies to deal with stress in order to prevent it from building up and affecting you in such ways.

Excessive anger can also be a result of low self-esteem issues. For example, if you never feel good enough or worthy enough, you may tend to lash out if you perceive yourself as slighted in any way.

Angry outbursts can also result from difficulties and frustrations in trying to relate to other people or in some cases from difficulty making sense of the social world, which is sometimes because of a lack of certain skills.

All these reasons are in essence because your essential emotional needs are not being met in balance and you lack a sense of security, a sense achievement, a sense of status, a sense of control or connection with others in your life. Finding ways to get your emotional needs met in balance can help to alleviate your anger issues.

Excessive anger can also have a root and relate back to some incident from years ago, which may even be a forgotten experience in which emotions such as fear or resentment were suppressed, but later trigger off angry outbursts. This can happen because there is an ‘alarm system’ in our brain, called the amygdala, which has access to our emotional memories and if it picks up on something in a person’s current life that resembles a previous upsetting experience, it can trigger off a reaction such as anger. This is an unconscious process and it explains people sometimes get angry outbursts for no obvious reason. All Mindfully Well therapists can give you professional help to deal with these unconscious processes.
